The Gatombooya factory is one of four washing stations that make up the Barichu Farmers Cooperative Society. Smallholder producers from the surrounding villages deliver ripe cherry here, where it’s pulped, fermented, washed in fresh water from the Kirigu River, and dried slowly on raised beds.
The name Gatombooya comes from the Kikuyu word for “swamp,” a nod to the area’s fertile, low-lying terrain — perfect for coffee cultivation.
Expect all the vibrancy you’d hope for from Nyeri: sparkling acidity, juicy fruit tones, and a clean, structured cup. Blood orange and black currant lead the way, rounded out with soft nectarine sweetness.
This lot is Gatombooya at its best — bright, complex, and full of character.
